28 November 2016
On 13th November, the world celebrated World Kindness Day and Regent Brighton marked the occasion with a series of talks and encouraged students to explore the idea of kindness through creative writing.
Students were invited to attend a talk given by Emily Kenward about her initiative, Time to Talk Befriending, that gathers volunteers who make a real difference helping the elderly in Brighton and Hove reduce feelings of loneliness. Her speech focused on the idea of a small acts of kindness having a much bigger impact on an individual, and how her work promotes happiness and well-being among the elderly in Brighton. Students were very interested in taking part in some afternoon tea and cake meetings when they would be able to practise their English communication skills with the elderly. You can find out more about this initiative here.
The film Pay it Forward was also shown in the school giving our students a chance to practise their comprehension skills and learn about how even a small act of kindness can have a positive and lasting effect.
Using the talk and film as inspiration, students were given the chance to express their thoughts, feelings and ideas about kindness by taking part in a creative writing competition. You can see some of their short stories by clicking here.
See below images from the day along with some of the quotes about kindness that were posted around the school.
