Regent Brighton recognises that wellbeing should be a priority for us all and it is important to raise awareness of something that includes everyone, especially since mental health has become such a topic of discussion in the media in recent times.
With Mental Health Awareness week taking place from 13th - 19th May, we thought it was a great opportunity to promote various ways of looking after yourself. We have decided to focus solely on the ways how we can maintain good mental health just as you would your physical health. We discussed how things like sleeping well, eating healthily, exercising, drinking plenty of water or resting can have beneficial effects on both our physical and mental health.
We have invited our students to take part in talks and projects that can help them have positive associations with the term 'mental health'.
Our Academic Manager, Philip, got involved in an after school film-making project on the theme of happiness. The students started by discussing their ideas for the film and then, later in the week, collaborated in filming and editing their sequences. The project provided a relaxed, fun opportunity for students to work together and use their English to explore lifestyle choices that can contribute towards positive mental health, such as exercise and spending time surrounded by nature.
We hope to continue making other short films in the coming weeks, with students selecting themes which they feel passionately about, and having creative freedom over the genres and content they explore together.
Gosia, the Principal, did a couple of talks this week about her ways of looking after physical and emotional wellbeing. She shared the story of her trip to India (where she became a Yoga Teacher), and the benefits of yoga and meditation. She encouraged students to think of mental health as an integral part of their overall happiness.
