5 ways to build your fluency in English [Study tips]

Fluency is something all language learners strive for as it is thought of as representing the peak of English ability.  However, fluency can also be considered as subjective and not a fixed goal. In fact, Oxford Dictionaries defines fluency as "the ability to speak or write a foreign language easily and accurately". We all strive to use foreign languages with greater ease and accuracy, so keep reading for our top 5 tips for improving your fluency.

  1. Talk with native speakers

Listening to and speaking with native speakers is essential if you want to refine the natural rhythm of your speech and sound more like a native speaker yourself. See if there’s a local meetup group you can join or create one in your area using

  1. Think in English - try not to translate

This is often easier said than done, but if you can think in English you’re likely to see an improvement in your spoken and written English. At first try narrating the things you do in your day to yourself, e.g ‘I’m making my breakfast’ or ‘I’m meeting my friends for a meal at 8’. When you're more confident you can get creative and make up conversations. The more you do it, the easier it will become!

  1. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes - Be confident

Confidence is essential to sounding natural in another language. Everybody makes mistakes, even native speakers, but if you have the confidence to speak without fear of errors then your speech will sound much more natural. It’s also important to note that mistakes are important if you want to improve! Ask your friends to point out mistakes if you make them so you’ll know where you went wrong.

  1. Surround yourself in English

Put yourself in an English speaking environment where you can learn passively. Watch films, TV shows and YouTube videos with English subtitles or audio to help you absorb the language in your spare time. Try to read books or news in English, you could download the BBC news app on Apple or Android and read the headlines when you have a few moments to spare.

  1. Practise every day

The more you do something, the easier it will become. Whether you're planning to study for a few hours or just want to review your recent vocabulary, make sure you make a little time every day for your studies. Make yourself a study plan and decide how much time a week you are going to spend studying and stick to it. It can be helpful to establish a routine or join a study group to help you stick to your goals.
