Knowledge for a Global Community at Regent Cambridge

Lena is the Client Services and Finance Officer at Regent Cambridge and has been part of countless students’ journeys towards their future in English. Here, she shares her experience of our unique teaching methods and tells us how she realised that language courses can be even better than she imagined when she first came to Cambridge as a language student herself.

The English World course at Regent is a full time study programme designed to have an impact on the present and future life of the learner. It goes beyond traditional language teaching and builds the knowledge and skills students need for their future lives.

Knowledge for the Global Community is the lesson at the heart of Regent’s English World programme. Working in Client Services at Regent Cambridge made me very curious to see what makes our courses so special with my own eyes.

I went to see two Knowledge for the Global Community sessions last week, allowing me to have a better understanding of the structure of the class from a student’s perspective. Once upon a time, I was a language student myself who travelled to the UK to to learn English right here in Cambridge, but I had never heard of a lesson like Knowledge for the Global Community and I didn’t completely understand the benefits or what I missed out on during my own course years ago.

I saw the students discovering the week’s research topic for the first time at the beginning of the week, with each person being encouraged to add a different perspective from their own cultural background or professional experience. Each opinion mattered and contributed to an evolving discussion which resulted in a smartly-presented talk from each student at the end of the week.

My decision to study English in the UK really paid off for me. The time I spent in Cambridge, where communicating in English was the only option, exceeded my expectations and I went back content with my improvement. Studying in an English-speaking country gives a richer vocabulary, more confident speaking skills and a deeper cultural understanding than I could have achieved without complete immersion in the language.

What I saw in Knowledge for the Global Community was different to what I had ever seen before. My own course gave me the chance to meet people from all over the world, which was one of the aspects that I enjoyed most. Regent’s Knowledge for a Global Community brings that experience into the classroom and makes it part of the course. I now realise what I missed out on: a way of learning English that is sophisticated, that develops broad knowledge and encourages critical thinking. I can see how students taking part in Knowledge for the Global Community develop and advance a range of skills that equip them to address key international questions while becoming confident in using English to express themselves. It really is “English as a life skill” in action.

Now that I work at Regent Cambridge, I still get the chance to meet people from all over the world and be part of a community of learning where everyone is discovering new things about the international environment. I enjoy taking part in our students’ lives in the UK and helping to create the eye-opening experience of being a Regent student. I feel immensely proud to be part of a school that offers such excellent educational outcomes. Being a part of the Regent team has broadened my own horizons and I wish I had known the difference when I chose my own English course years ago.
